Summer 2015: Jubilate Mozart!

At Salzburg Dom Cathedral
In June 2015, 28 members and friends of the Choral Arts Society of Frederick will be traveling to Salzburg, Austria to participate in the 2015 Mozart International Choral Festival. The group will perform Mozart’s’ Coronation Mass in C Major, KV317 and the Dan Forrest “Te Deum” at the famous Salzburg Dom Cathedral. In addition, they will sing for Mass on Sunday, under the direction of the Domkapellmeister, Janos Czifra. Following the Festival, the group will tour Austria and Germany, taking in the sights, singing in fabulous historic venues and reveling in the joy of being abroad.

Spring 2015: Concert with the FCC Wind Ensemble

Spring 2014: Best of Stage and Screen

The Choral Arts Society of Frederick will conclude its 70th anniversary season by presenting "The Best of Stage and Screen". Choral Director Lynn Staininger, who is celebrating her 10th anniversary with CASF, has chosen medleys from such favorites as South Pacific and Oklahoma. Selections from West Side Story and Chicago will also be featured. Other musical selections will be performed by the Men’s Doo-Wop group and the Sirens women’s group.

Spring 2014: Echoes of Our Past: A Musical Tribute

At All Saints' Episcopal Church
As part of the Bell and History Days celebration in Frederick, the Choral Arts Society will present John Rutter’s Requiem on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 106 West Church Street in Frederick. The Rutter Requiem was written in l985 by the British composer, John Rutter; the composition is dedicated to the memory of his father. The piece draws from the Roman Catholic Mass as well as Psalm 23 and Psalm 130 and the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. Rutter is well known in Great Britain as is his choir, the Cambridge Singers. Choral Director, Lynn Staininger, who is celebrating her 10th the chorus will also conduct the chorus in performing Dr. Wayne Wold ‘s composition, “Pensive Gazing” which recognizes the 150th Battle of Gettysburg. The lyrics for this piece are based on Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass. Dr. Wold is well known for his compositions and is Associate Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department at Hood College. The All Saints’ Bell Choir, under the direction of Carroll Howe, CASF Accompanist and All Saints’ Episcopal Church Music Director, will also perform at this concert.

A Decade of Favorites

Fall 2013: A Decade of Favorites

At FCC's Jack B. Kussmaul Theater
“A Decade of Favorites” will be the theme of the holiday choral concert to be presented by the Choral Arts Society of Frederick. As part of its 70th Staininger’s 10th holiday concerts. This concert will include both community members as well as students from Frederick Community College’s choral classes. This concert will include holiday favorites such as “White Christmas” , “Carol of the Bells’ , “Celtic Christmas Celebration” to be performed by the entire chorus . The Men’s DooWop group will perform several of their signature pieces including “The Chipmunk Song” and “You’re a Mean one, Mr. Grinch”. In addition, the CASF Sirens will perform several selections. This concert is designed for the entire family and it will be a wonderful kickoff for the holiday season. FCC student Olivia Bishop will be performing a song that she wrote and recently recorded with Moy Dumadag, "Mistletoe". Bishop and Dumadag are both music students at FCC, and are making the most of the new FCC music lab technologies in creating the background accompaniment for this playful project.

Are you looking for a family event for Mother’s Day weekend? If so, bring your family to hear "Songs from the Cinema" which will be presented by the Choral Arts Society of Frederick on Saturday, May 11 at 3:00 p.m. The concert will take place in the Kussmaul Theater on the campus of Frederick Community College. Choral Director Lynn Staininger has designed a concert guaranteed to appeal to anyone who loves the movies. Special selections from movies such as Ever After, The Hunger Games, Paradise Road, The Mission, Les Miserable and The Rocky Horror Picture Show will capture the interest of music lovers. Special guests will include Ed Stanley as oboe soloist to accompany the chorus for "Gabriel’s Oboe" from The Mission. Also, Meelis Joesaar will perform Chopin’s Nocturne in C# Minor from The Pianist. The CASF Women’s Ensemble and the Men’s DooWop Group will also provide special selections. "The Captives Hymn" by Margaret Dryburgh, as heard in Paradise Road, will be featured as well. Margaret Dryburgh was born in England and became a Presbyterian missionary and nurse who worked in China and Singapore. While trying to escape the Japanese in l942, she was captured and sent to a Japanese internment camp. During her time there, she wrote music and organized a women’s choir based on her memory of classical music. She died in April of 1945, but her musical compositions remain.

If you are looking for a family focused Christmas concert, the Choral Arts Society of Frederick concert is the place for you and your family. “A Colorful Choral Arts Christmas” will be presented at two separate locations. The first concert will take place on Friday, December 7 at 7:30 p.m. at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 106 West Church Street in Frederick. The second concert will be presented at the Kussmaul Theater on the campus of Frederick Community College on Saturday, December 8 at 3 p.m. Both venues are accessible. Choral Conductor Lynn Staininger has created a special concert featuring Daniel Pinkham’s Christmas Cantata as well as a selection of holiday favorites. A highlight of the concert will be an audience sing-a-long. In addition, the CASF Sirens’ Women’s Ensemble will provide several holiday songs of the season. Special guests will include the Saint James Brass Quintet under the direction of Dr. John Pursell. This group is one of the oldest continually performing brass quintets in the area. For more than 25 years, they have provided brass chamber music in the Hagerstown-Frederick-Chambersburg area. The group takes its name from its association with the Saint James School in Hagerstown where one of the founding members, the late Robert Grabb, taught music for many years. Current members of the group include three founding members including Dana Shoppert, tuba, Neil Corwell, trombone, and Edward Shupp, French horn. Two trumpeters, John Pursell, and Whitney Blickenstaff, complete the quintet. Their group will provide several familiar Christmas carols.
